- Made:
- 1880-1943
- maker:
- Whitcombe, Harold Arthur
A collection of photographs taken and collected by Dr H.A. Whitcombe. They show trams and tramways, along with other forms of public transport including horse, electric and motor buses, from the 1830 until Dr Whitcombe's death in 1943. These are arranged in 20 albums each of which is arranged either by geographic region or type of vehicle. These photographs illustrate systems from across the United Kingdom, Ireland and continental Europe, especially the Dutch steam tramway system. There are also a number of images from further afield including South Africa, Australia and North America. There are several indexes that list these images both by number and by location. In addition to this there is a series of blueprint drawings showing Dutch steam trams along with lantern slides used to illustrate Dr Whitcombe's paper on the history of the steam tram. The collection also consists of a large number of negatives.

The photographs were arranged into albums by Dr Whitcombe and this arrangement had been maintained. They are divided into those relating to British tramways (HAW/A/01 - HAW/A/11) which have names of tram depots in the United Kingdom that operated steam trams, and those relating to international tramways (HAW/A/12 - HAW/18) which have names relating to cities which operated steam tramways. Each of these albums is arranged either to show the development of tramway vehicles or to provide a wide range of images arranged on a geographic basis.
