A collection of papers and research material from the Illumination Group of the General Electric Company, later OSRAM-GEC Ltd. This collection is made up of reports and papers produced by the group at the Hirst Research Centre. These are dated between the 1920s and 1970s, which coincides with the period where GEC owned the OSRAM trademark outright and prior the joint undertaking with the German company. Beyond this there are also papers relating to work undertaken to produce street lighting including drawings of high intensity road traffics signals and photographs of the effects of various types of lamp along with some papers produced by the Chemical Laboratory relating to the production of quartz crystals. Additionally, there is also a selection of more general material produced by GEC during the 1970s, 80s and 90s relating to the work of the Hirst Research Centre. These give an overview of the research being undertaken at the time across all of the different subsidiaries that made up the GEC group.
