Extract of cascara sagrada is used as a treatment for constipation. Mde from the dried bark of a species of buckthorn tree, originating in the north-west United States. It was used by indigenious people for centuries who realised that drying the bark prevented vomiting and cramping side effects. European settlers and colonists adopted its use, and it became a popular remedy in late 1800s.
