The Open University, established in 1969, used communications technology to improve access to high-quality teaching via distance learning. This microscope was part of the first Science Home Experiment Kit that was mailed to students on the OU Science foundation course S100.
The microscope was based on a design by Dr John McArthur conceived initially on expedition in Brazil in 1929. Developed later, McArthur won a Duke of Edinburgh Design Prize in 1972 for the plastic version he created specially for the OU.
