Model of a Red Cross travelling operating theatre from Great War, English, 1914-1968

Used by the Red Cross Society during the First World War, this mobile operating theatre would be used for emergency operations behind the front lines, perhaps en route to a field hospital. Inside the truck is a range of model equipment and provisions, including an operating table, stores for water and medicines and cupboards for surgical instruments.

A specialised vehicle like this was a great innovation compared to what had been available in previous conflicts.
