Collection of 35 phrenological plaster cast heads and face masks from the Wadebridge Town Institution, Cornwall, various makers, 1823-1850

35 plaster casts, part of a collection formerly belonging to the Wadebridge Town Institute, Cornwall, England and used in the study of phrenology. Many having lost their labels are now unidentifable but those that are known are a good illustration of the contents of such a collection of casts. They include: F.J. Gall the founder of phrenology; Rev. Dr. Dodd, executed for forgery; J.J. Audubon the American ornithological artist; Johnathan Swift satirist and Dean of St. Patrick's, Dublin and Mungo Park the Scottish traveller, all thought to be remarkable in the exercise or deficiency of one or more of the phrenological organs. Such a collection was a way of familiarising oneself with the positions and manifestations of the organs in real life situations.
