Lorentz 'Instantaneous light machine'
Lorentz 'Instantaneous Light Machine', after 1806. This is an oil lamp which is lit by an electric spark acting on a stream of hydrogen gas passing over the wick. Lorentz was not the first to devise this type of lamp lighter; the instrument maker George Adams the Younger mentions Volta, Ingenhouz, and others. In 1823 these machines were superseded by the more convenient Dobereiner lamp.
