A retractor is used during surgery to lift and move organs and tissues to give the surgical team a better view of the operation. This example was designed to be used on the liver.
Manickavasagar Balasegaram, a Malaysian surgeon working in the 1980s, designed a number of liver clamps and retractors of which this is an example. They remain in use today.
