Knife, steel blade
Knife, steel blade, bois durci handle, made by Savigny and Co., 67 St. James's Street, London, England.
Set of surgical instruments in walnut case, by Savigny, owned by Dr. Evans in Crimea, c.1855
This surgical instrument set belonged to Dr Usher Williamson Evans (1823-1912). Dr Evans volunteered for surgical work early in the Crimean War (1853-1856).
On his arrival in the Crimea, it was noted by Florence Nightingale that Evans had some experience of hospital administration back in Britain. This then became his priority and occupied most of his time in the Crimea. It may explain why this set appears to have been rarely used.
