Stand camera for 13 x 18cm plates. No makers name (but probably French or German). Folding plate camera in walnut with nickel fittings. No lens or panel. Sliding rising and cross front. Front fixed, back adjustable in three positions with peg and keyslot fittings. Rack and pinion focussing, double extension bellows. Hinged baseplate locked by sliding element. With one bookform wooden double darkslide.

He wears a black coat and his left arm rests on a raised object, possibly the back of a chair. The background is a gradient of black to brown. The painting is in a rectangular frame of walnut wood with a gilt beading inner. A plaque beneath the painting reads ‘WILLIAM HANCOCK. BORN JULY 1788’.
