More
General William Crawford Gorgas (1854-1920) virtually eliminated yellow fever among workers building the Panama Canal. Gorgas was an American army physician and surgeon and this is his khaki field jacket. Gorgas had himself recovered from yellow fever, therefore becoming immune to the disease. He then went to Panama and improved sanitary conditions. He later became Surgeon General of the United States Army and occupied this position until after the First World War.
