Three (3) Ross "Wheel of Life" type lantern slides. One by Newton & Co., c. 1875. [B1480 : B1486 : A199282 : A199283 : A203064]

A wheel of life slide projects images of a repeated motion sequence onto a screen through a magic lantern projector. The images were printed onto a glass disc which was moved by turning a handle which in turn moved a shutter mechanism by the use of strings over a double grooved pulley with one string crossed so that the glass slide and shutter turned in opposite directions. It was invented by Thomas Ross and manufactured and sold by many retailers from the 1870s on.
