Disc of blue frit, from Tel el Amarna, Upper Egypt, c. 1370 BC. Frit is a granular material produced by pre-heating the the raw ingredients of glass in a furnace or kiln to about 850C. In ancient times when furnaces could only achieve temperatures of about 1000C, glass was frequently made from frit alone.
