Walpole’s Nerve and Brain Tonic was a ‘strengthening tonic’. It was made by Southampton-based Walpole Dispensary and Botanic Pharmacy Limited. The tonic was recommended for clinical depression, lack of concentration, low vitality and the relief of ‘nervous debility’. It was suggested a teaspoonful should be added to half a wine glass of water and drunk four times daily between meals. The product was typical of medical preparations sold ‘over the counter’ in chemists across the country.
