Glass bottle of surma by M.D. Hashim, Karachi, Pakistan, 1970-1981

Surma is the main ingredient in this Ayurvedic eye cosmetic. It is used to promote good eye health. It prevents disease and illuminates the eye area to create a traditional cosmetic effect. It also contains high levels of lead. Sustained use can lead to lead poisoning which causes brain damage.

Ayurveda is a medical tradition. Its roots are in the Indian subcontinent. However, its influence has spread to other parts of the world. This Ayurvedic eye cosmetic was imported into the United Kingdom from Pakistan during the 1970s.
