Model of capstan

Model of a capstan and windlass, made by George Adams, instrument maker to King George III in 1762. A windlass forms a pair with the capstan. The capstan has a vertical axis and the windlass a horizontal axis but otherwise they are the same machine. Capstans and windlasses were often cited as examples of the application of mechanical powers in courses of experimental philosophy.
