Steam locomotive, Southern Railway, Schools class 4-4-0 No 925 "Cheltenham", designed by R.E.L. Maunsell, built at Eastleigh in 1934, withdrawn in 1962.
In 1930 R E L Maunsell produced the largest 4-4-0 design to operate in this country. These were the “Schools” class, which eventually totalled 40. They were capable of operating over the Hastings line with its restricted clearances, and also worked some of the lighter express trains on the lines to Bournemouth and the Kent Coast, as well as to Portsmouth. Cheltenham was built at Eastleigh in 1934, and when withdrawn in 1962 was chosen for preservation. It has been restored to the post-war Southern Railway malachite green livery.
