London & North Western Railway motor coach
- manufacturer:
- Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon
Motor coach, London & North Western Railway and London Midland & Scottish Railway, electric motor open 3rd brake, No 28249, built 1915, by Metropolitan Carriage Wagon & Finance Co., electrical equipment by Maschinenfabrik Oerlikon. This motor coach was part of an electric train running on the London & North Western Railway’s (LNWR) suburban services in London. Electric trains were cleaner than steam trains and accelerated more quickly, making them perfect for moving large numbers of people on lines that have closely spaced stops. Railways serving growing cities were quick to realise this, and the LNWR electrified its London commuter routes decades before its main lines.
