Grandfather Clock, North Eastern Railway, by Humphreys of Barnard Castle from Lartington Station.
The clock maker inspired Charles Dickens weekly periodical “Master Humphrey’s Clock” published 1840-41 which amongst others introduced readers to the Old Curiosity Shop and Barnaby Rudge. Lartington Station was opened in 1861 by the South Durham and Lancashire Union Railway, which constructed the line from the Stockton and Darlington Rly at West Auckland, to Tebay via Barnard Castle and Stainmore Summit. The station closed in January 1962.
There is no information on file about the location of the clock in the station. However, it seems likely it would be in either the waiting room or booking office.
