Enamelled brass watch-chain medallion, ASRS, ASRS/Help our noble railway dog. 1" diam. ( 25mm)

In 1882 collie 'Help', along with owner and guard Climpson, worked on the Brighton line collecting money for the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants' Orphan fund. This fund raised money for children who were left destitute due to their fathers' death or injury at work on the railway. Help worked until his retirement in 1889, and raised a total of £1000 for the cause. After his death, he was stuffed and placed at Brighton station where he continued to raise between 12 and 15 shillings a week for the orphans.

The public could buy medallians like this to show their support for the charity.
