The Flying Scotsman express passenger train service between London and Edinburgh began in the 1860s, although it wasn’t formally given the name until 1924. It continues to this day.

British Railways introduced its fleet of twenty-two Deltic diesel locomotives in 1962, the year this poster was published. They were used on express passenger services on the East Coast Main Line between London and Edinburgh until 1982. The locomotive from 1862 is a Great Northern Railway steam locomotive with a single pair of main driving wheels.

The artist, Laurence Bagley, was born in Southampton in 1922. He was a commercial artist who specialised in maritime, aviation, railway and motoring subjects. He worked as an illustrator for the Airspeed company and the Royal Navy's torpedo school, HMS Vernon. He produced posters for British Railways and illustrations for magazines such as Aeromodeller, and was also an author. Bagley died in 1983.
