Stern Bush recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Royal Charter, the steam clipper which inspired the creation and coining of the term “weather forecast”. The iron vessel was wrecked off the north-east coast of Anglesey on the 26th of October 1859.
The ship had been making was making its way from Melbourne, Australia towards Liverpool, England when it was hit by force 12 hurricane subsequently nicknamed the ‘Royal Charter storm’. Robert Fitzroy, founder of the Meteorological Office, investigated the clipper’s sinking and was convinced that the storm could have been tracked and predicted before the crash. After being granted authorization, the Meteorological Office then created a storm warning service which they named the “weather forecast”.
