Rigged model of H.M. Bark 'Endeavour', 1974. Originally merchant collier ‘Earl of Pembroke’, the ship was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1768, to be refitted and renamed for the voyage of Lieutenant (later Captain) James Cook for his voyage to Tahiti to observe the transit of Venus.
The merchant collier ‘Earl of Pembroke’ was built by Thomas Fishburn and launched from Whitby, Yorkshire in 1764.
In 1768, the Royal Society persuaded George III to finance a scientific expedition to observe the 1769 transit of Venus from the southern hemisphere. The voyage was the first circumnavigation by James (later Captain) Cook. Once Cook had taken his transit observations from the designated outpost in Tahiti, he opened an envelope of secret instructions from the Admiralty, which tasked him to search for the uncharted but famed ‘southern continent’, so Britain could claim its discovery.
