Marconi-EMI Emitron camera head, serial no.76037, made in Hayes, UK. One of the original Emitrons used by Marconi-EMI from the beginning of the BBC's British Television Service at Alexandra Palace, 1936.
The Emitron camera was developed by Marconi-EMI and used by the BBC from the beginning of the British Television Service in 1936. The technology was in its infancy at launch and the cameras were adapted with developments to the technology. Early Emitron tubes had shorter electron guns, when these were lengthened the camera cases were extended. Initially the cameras had no viewfinder. This camera head shows the adaptations made over its lifetime.
The Emitron cameras were used in studio and for outside broadcasts. They were used by the BBC to shoot the first television broadcasts of sporting events like Wimbledon and the Oxford-Cambridge Boat Race.
