Dress chariot: late 19th century.
This fine carriage is a dress chariot that was in use around 1889. It is a type of large, closed, four-wheeled vehicle used for court or ceremonial occasions, the design of which remained largely unchanged throughout the 19th century. This particular carriage is richly decorated with a dark green and black body and the coat of arms of the Duke and Duchess of Fife painted on both sides, showing who it was owned by.
