Sectioned Lexus LS400 car, 1989. Manufactured by Toyota in Japan. Has a four-litre, all-alloy, four-cam, 32-valve V8 engine that achieves 241 bhp. The car has four-speed automatic transmission and a four-door saloon body.
This was Toyota’s first attempt to join the luxury car market alongside the likes of Mercedes and Jaguar. Launched in 1989 in the USA, the Lexus was well received. When it was launched in the UK in 1990, the LS400 cost £34,250.The success of the Lexus LS400 showcased Toyota's ‘Lean Production’ style where people were made responsible for anticipating and eliminating faults as they arose opposed to spending time and money correcting faults at the end of the production line. With no previous experience in the luxury car market, the LS400 was developed from scratch in six years by 2300 technicians and 1400 engineers.
