[Ms. notebook of Timothy Hackworth, 1827 Sept-1828 Sept. Contains notes of happenings on the Stockton and Darlington Railway in its early days. It records that the Royal George locomotive (the only one with a name at that time) started work on 29 Nov 1827 and broke down on 13 Dec. Also that No.1 locomotive (afterwards known as Locomotion) exploded at Aycliffe Lane while taking in water on 1 Jul 1828, killing its driver, John Cree.
