Clarke model flying machine

Clarke model flying machine, and wooden properller, by Thomas Wigstan Kinglake Clarke, United Kingdom, 1907-1908

T.W.K. Clarke was one of the earliest aircraft builders in Britain. He worked as a construction engineer on the Bakerloo and Piccadilly underground lines before setting up as an aeronautical consulting engineer (the first in Britain) and manufacturer in 1903. In 1909 he built a Wright-type glider for Alec Ogilvie which made record glides of about 0.4 km (1/4 mile). His 'Clarke's Flyer' models were designed for sale to encourage interest in aviation, but like many pioneers, he used model flying as a useful experimental tool. In 1912 he joined the Royal Aircraft Factory, Farnborough.
