Model. Wright aeroplane, 1903, scale 1:10.
Diorama featuring a model (scale 1:10) of the aircraft in which Orville Wright (1871-1948) and Wilbur Wright (1867-1912) made the world's first controlled and powered flights on 17 December 1903. The brothers developed a flying machine and learned to fly over several years using gliders before fitting an engine. The original Wright Flyer was placed in the Science Museum by Orville Wright in 1928, but was returned to the United States in 1948. This diorama represents the Wright Flyer on the wooden launching track just before taking off on its first flight, at Kill Devil Hills, near Kitty Hawk, North Carolina in the United States.
