The GPO gave all wall telephone models odd numbers and table telephones even numbers. Candlestick telephones were used on the new exchanges that did not require a local battery. It had a heavy base to ensure that the microphone was held in a vertical or near-vertical position, as they worked more efficiently when in this position. A separate bell set had to be provided, as there was no space for one on or in the phone. This telephone does not have a dial, as it was used on a manual telephone exchange.
