Crossbar switching dates back to the earliest days of manual telephone switchboards, which used sets of overlapping brass bars with holes at the intersections for brass plugs to connect telephone calls. This switch had ten horizontal and ten vertical bars, so could support up to 100 subscribers. Crossbar switches needed less maintenance than step-by-step switches exchanges, and operated more simply.
