Bas-relief head and shoulders of Guglielmo Marconi on brass lamina, engraved "1903, R. Bravi, Milano", made by R Bravi, Milano, Italy, 1903.
Guglielmo Marconi was a pioneer of wireless telegraphy. Born in Italy in 1874, he began experimenting in about 1894 after having become aware of the work of Hertz. He took his apparatus to England in 1896, where he made some of his most notable advances, including, in December 1901, transmitting the first wireless telegraphy signals across the Atlantic Ocean. He was awarded the Nobel prize in physics in 1909.
