Ekco TA201 vision-only television set, 1939

Made:
1939 in Southend-on-Sea
manufacturer:
E K Cole Limited

1939 EKCO television receiver. Vision only set (no sound).

The internal electronics of this 7 inch television set are mounted on a steel frame which allowed the entire set to be easily removed from the cabinet for servicing. It cost 22 guineas when new. It is a ‘vision only’ set – which meant a saving of about £5 on the purchase price of a normal television by buying one which had no sound. The purchaser then had to rely on using a suitable radio set to amplify the television sound. This idea didn't really catch on however, as it saved comparatively little money in the real cost of construction of a television receiver.

The EKCO company was a British electronics company founded in 1924 and named after its founder Eric Kirkham Cole. They first made radio receivers and later expanded into television receivers like this early pre-Second World War example.
