Murphy Model 242 FM/AM broadcast receiver, 1955

In 1955, the BBC began to broadcast on VHF using frequency modulation (FM). With a receiver like this, programmes could be heard with enhanced fidelity and neglible interference.

Initally, public response to FM was lukewar. Television was robbing radio of its evening audience, and during the daytime medium-wave reception was acceptable. Moreover, in many locations FM reception was only satisfactory with a properly installed aerial.
