Model of Vostok 1, scale 1:24.
This is a model of the spacecraft Vostok 1 which was manned by Yuri Gagarin. When Gagarin became the first human to orbit the Earth, few outside the Soviet Union knew what his spacecraft looked like. Speculation was rife that the Vostok was a winged vehicle. Some interpretations were derived from the designs seen on Soviet postage stamps. The model shown here was commissioned by the Science Museum in 1964 and includes several inaccuracies, the greatest of which is the collar surrounding the base of the craft.
