Replica Apollo 11 lunar excursion module
The lunar module was the lander used by Apollo astronauts to touch down onto the lunar surface. It carried two astronauts. Six lunar modules were used, one for each of the successful landing missions, the first in July 1969, the last in December 1972. Two others were flown in space: Apollo 9 (March, 1969) tested it in Earth orbit; during the aborted Apollo 13 mission (November, 1970) it acted as a 'lifeboat' for the crew in place of their damaged command service module. It was designed and manufactured by the Grumman company in the United States. This replica was commissioned by the Science Museum for its Exploration gallery (1977) and was built by one of Pinewood Studios' main set and scenery contractors.
