Model, scale 1:24, of the midship section of a sea-camel, unsigned, Russia, 1854-1869. Used to lift large ships over the bar between Kronstadt and St Petersburg. Sea-camels were buoyancy boxes that could be attached to the side of a vessel to reduce her draft. Full with ballast water, the sea-camels were attached to the side of a vessel. By pumping out the water from the seacamels, the vessel's draft was reduced.
