Dupont Coder 300 DNA synthesiser, used to investigate structure-function relationships in enzymes

The DuPont Coder 300 DNA synthesiser is seen on the right. It was used together with the Genesis 2000 sequencer (1996-310) as part of an investigation by the Institute of Food Research. The institute’s protein engineering cycle investigated the structure/function relationships in enzymes such as papain. The effects of site-specific mutations were predicted using the synthesiser. They were verified in a cloned specimen using the sequencer.
