This model is a child's chain-stitch sewing machine, the Singer model 20, which was designed as a toy but often advertised as a 'lightweight portable for the Lady on the move'. Introduced by Singer in 1910 and made at their Elizabethport plant in the USA until the 1950s, this machine had a simple design. At least six competitors, including Grain, Essex and the Co-op produced exact copies of it. The single thread stitch it produced was not secure but was very useful for sewing lace and similar lightweight cloths. It was also convenient for tacking together fabrics in a temporary manner for checking the size and fitting.
