Safety lamp

Safety lamp, Clanny (bonnetted), Stokes shut off, maker: J. Davis and Son, Derby, marking: makers name, 1901

Safety devices were increasingly employed to prevent accidents arising from careless or improper use of safety lamps in mines, one of the most frequent temptations being for the miner to relight his own lamp in the working place. This lamp is fitted with Stokes' shut-off, consisting of a ring of brass punched with holes 0.25 in. diam., placed at the top of the bonnet over the exit holes of the lamp. The ring can be rotated so that the exit holes of the lamp are either open to the atmosphere or closed, thus giving control of the combustion of the lamp. The oil -cup is secured to one of the standards by a lead plug which allows a small adjustment when screwing up the lamp.
