Open lamp used by natives in the collieries of Giridih Bengal

Open lamp used by workers in the collieries of Giridih, Bengal, early twentieth-century

This type of lamp resembles lamps used by Sicilian miners and is even simpler than the Roman lamp (Inv. 1904-96). It is simply a saucer of unglazed earthenware with a lip for supporting a cotton wick lying loosely in oil. The saucer is supported by a ring from which extend wires twisted together and bent to form a hook.
