Safety lamp

Safety lamp, Davy, self-extinguishing device, maker: A. Dubrulle, Lille, marking: makers name. 1855-65

Safety devices were increasingly employed to prevent accidents arising from careless or improper use of safety lamps in mines, one of the most frequent temptations being for the miner to relight his own lamp in the working place. This form of self -extinguishing lamp was patented in 1855 by Mons. Dubrulle. The oil reservoir is urn -shaped, and the cage holding the gauze is attached to it by a bayonet joint and held by a vertical spring bolt, which can only be withdrawn by screwing down a collar which is also attached to the wick, so extinguishing it. The lamp is made of sheet iron.
