Safety lamp, Morgan, Mueseler (bonnetted) type, double bonnet, triple gauze, marking: Morgan's patent, 1884-5
This is a lamp of the bonneted Mueseler type, patented in 1884-5 by Mr. W. Morgan. The air for combustion enters through five rows of holes in the outer bonnet, through six rows of slits in the inner bonnet out of line with the holes, and has to pass through three gauze cases before reaching the flame. The internal metal chimney delivers the products of combustion into an inverted gauze cone inside the first gauze case; outside this is the second case, while the third is open topped. The lock is a short vertical bolt held by a spring in a notch, and is released by a special key. Weight, 3.25 lb. This lamp was one of two specially mentioned by the adjudicators in Mr. Ellis Lever's competition in 1885, and was favourably reported on by the Commissioners of 1886, who found it to be safe in explosive mixtures of the highest velocities used.
