Safety lamp

Safety lamp, E 1, Mueseler type (bonnetted), maker: Patterson and Co. Ltd., Newcastle on Tyne, marking: makers name and Type E 1, 1925, modified to work electrically, and key, and tool for glass retaining ring and oil funnel

This lamp, which is gauzeless at the air inlet, is a modern development of the Mueseler type. Air for combustion enters the lamp through holes on the underside of the flange supporting the bonnet, passes down the four tubes round the glass, through the perforated ring below the glass and finally emerges round the flame. The products of combustion rise up the chimney and pass out through the gauze cylinder and through holes at the top of the bonnet. The lamp is thus a Mueseler in which the air inlet is through perforated plate below the flame, as in the Boty lamp, while the air is brought down from the bottom of the bonnet through tubes, as in the Gray lamp. The oil cup is fitted with electric re -lighting, an oil valve for filling, and a magnetic lock. The lock consists of a bolt that can only be disengaged from the teeth on the underside of the glass retaining ring by a special magnet kept in the lamp room.
