Hand net-braiding machine by Helyer Bridport, Dorset, England, 1865-1875, based on a design by James Paterson.

Hand net-braiding machine by Helyer Bridport, c. 1870, based on a design by James Paterson of Musselburgh, Scotland dating from 1820. Paterson moified his design in 1835 to produce the same knot as is used in hand-made netting. This type of machine, which required skill and strength to operate, was last used in 1951.
