Treadle lathe, made by Henry Maudslay, c.1812-1820. Maudslay's machine tools set new standards for efficiency and precision. This lathe, with overhead gear, tool cabinet and triangular bar bed, was made by Henry Maudslay for sale to amateur mechanics and small workshops, and he even used one of this type himself. The lathe is mounted on a bench with drawers and is equipped with a two-jaw universal chuck, an eccentric chuck, and various other tools and toolholders. Most importantly the slide rest, previously used almost exclusively for ornamental purposes, is redesigned here as an engineer's tool.
