Slide rest as used on early English ornamental lathes, with additional top slide for drilling spindle, (incomplete) by Holtzapffel

This belongs to the earliest type of English slide-rest for ornamental turning. It differs from the French slide-rests of the same period in having a V main slide.

The tool is advanced to the work by means of either a knob or a detachable lever, the depth of cut being regulated by a screw stop with a micrometer head.
