Drilling and slotting machine

Made:
1840

Drilling and slotting machine, formerly dated as C1817 but believed to be c. 1840

These two machines are built back to back and share the same cast-iron column as their chief structural element. Both machines were belt driven from overhead shafting.

These machines come from the workshop of Strutt and Arkwright's Mill at Milford and were used in the construction of cotton machinery in the early nineteenth century. If the machine was part of the original equipment of the shop, it could be as early as 1817; but as the invention of the slotting machine is attributed to Richard Roberts (see inventory no. 1938-332), who set up his own workshop only in 1817, the date of this machine must be presumed to be later.
