Safety lamp

Made:
1849 in Sheffield

Safety lamp, Biram, no specific type, from Mr. Biram, maker: Wm. Cutts, Sheffield, marking: makers name and "Biram's patent Economy", 1849, and interchangeable shield ( 1886-214/2).

This lamp embodies improvements patented in 1849 by Mr. Biram. The body is of semi -cylindrical form, air being admitted through gauze in a frame which can slide in the diametral plane, or if the lamp is to be used by viewers, etc., part of the gauze is replaced by mica. The frame is retained by a ring and a padlock. A metal chimney with gauze -protected exit holes replaces the usual gauze case. There is a silvered parabolic reflector behind the flame and a pricker projects through the back, the joint being made with a ball and socket.
