Columnar Engine, 1862
Small columnar engine built by the company of Maudslay, Sons & Field, to drive their models displayed at the London International Exhibition, 1862.
This compact single cylinder vertical engine was made by Maudslay, Sons & Field to drive the collection of models which they exhibited at the International Exhibition of 1862, held in South Kensington, London. The engine was positioned close to one of the main entrances to the exhibition, which might explain why it is so finely finished. However, Maudslay's had a reputation for mechanical excellence which was reflected in both their reputation and the quality of their output across the board.
